Yummy Yountville, California

Recently I found myself in Yountville to run some errands.  For those who don’t know Yountville is probably the gourmet capital of the world.  Well, of my world anyway.  The restaurants there are legendary.  Since it was lunch, or so I told myself, I stopped at Addendum, which is a little offshoot of the Ad Hoc restaurant and it serves boxed lunches to go Thursday – Saturday.  There are only two choices on the menu and I  chose the Buttermilk Fried Chicken.  You would be able to see a photo of it if I hadn’t eaten it so fast.  And I’m not kidding.  I inhaled it in one breath sitting at one of the little picnic tables in the middle of the Ad Hoc garden.

I believe it’s true that Yountville boasts more Michelin stars per capita than anyplace on Earth.  The entire town is only 1.5 square miles and has six Michelin stars.  Which simply means if you go to Yountville, go with an empty stomach and a full wallet.

Hunger relief to go.  Indeed!

Bouchon is just down the street.  I went there for a lovely brunch one Sunday and didn’t have a complaint in the world.  They were mortified however that it took longer than they thought was proper to bring the meal (trust me, I didn’t even notice) and insisted on picking up my check.  You can bet I have been back many times since.

Even the birds are well fed in Yountville.  This one was in front of the Bouchon Bakery eating part of someone’s croissant.  Note to self: if you are reincarnated as a bird, fly to Yountville, California.

If you want to have the meal of your life.  Go to the French Laundry.  A lot of the fruit and veg is grown in their gardens right across the street.  That’s a remarkably short “farm to table” .

I am so looking forward to eating at Bistro Jeanty, which I haven’t done yet but which I hear is amazing.

My apologies, I really feel I haven’t done justice to Yountville.  But to be honest, I think you can only do that with a knife and fork.  Not a camera!

You can’t drive for a block without hitting a celebrity chef.  As I was driving out of town I passed Thomas Keller walking down the street in his Chef’s coat and, this being Napa Valley, which is generally pretty friendly, he waved to me when he saw how excited I was to spot him.  Now if only I could get a free meal at The French Laundry.  I can dream… can’t I?

Wine Country Walk

I started out on my walk today, accompanied by my friend and fellow blogger, the very entertaining Lady Muffett, and the first thing we saw was the famous “chicken crossing the road”.  We would have gotten closer for a better picture if a giant Hawk hadn’t swooped down low enough to frighten the poor thing off.  Why did the chicken cross the road?  In this case I think it was going to get its mail!

We continued on a bit and the weather turned a little ominous.  We were just looking at this wonderful structure when the sun disappeared and some rather dramatic clouds came in.

We thought about turning back but decided to carry on.  Don’t worry if you ever get lost in the wine country there is plenty of signage to aid you.

We came to a treacherous bridge.  I was a little nervous to walk across the surface, especially when I looked below, and fortunately we didn’t bring the dogs!  But the Lady is adventurous and on we went.

There is nothing like the green of Spring.  And finally we were home.

Versatile Blogger Award

Becky at Clover and Thyme, which is a home and garden journal,  recently nominated me for the The Versatile Blogger Award!  Since I am somewhat new to the whole blogging world this was such a nice surprise for me when I logged in and saw her message.  I am a huge fan of her site which is always full of delicious recipes and interesting projects she is working on.  And her positive attitude toward life always inspires me so I am truly grateful she is a reader of my own humble blog.

You should absolutely visit Becky at Clover and Thyme.

So here are the Rules for Versatile Blogger Award according to their site:

  •  Thank the person who gave you this award. That’s common courtesy.
  •  Include a link to their blog. That’s also common courtesy — if you can figure out how to do it.
  •  Next, select 15 blogs/bloggers that you’ve recently discovered or follow regularly. ( I would add, pick blogs or bloggers that are excellent!)
  •  Nominate those 15 bloggers for the Versatile Blogger Award — you might include a link to your post nominating them, or to the Versatile Blogger Blog.
  •  Finally, tell the person who nominated you 7 things about yourself.

Hmmm … here are seven things about myself…

1. I live in the wine country but rarely drink wine.

2. Sometimes my plants in the garden disappear overnight when they are pulled underground by Voles.

3. The wild turkeys in the driveway are driving me crazy.  Especially when the fly over the fence and relieve themselves on the pool coping.

4. My dogs love when the wild turkeys fly over the fence and they can chase them out of the yard!

5. I sincerely believe one small piece of chocolate is worth years of therapy and there is nothing you can say to talk me out of it.

6.  I once baked a cheesecake that made my neighbor cry, it was that good.  Although to be fair, she was a little over emotional at the time anyway so maybe the cheesecake was only so so.

7. I want, more than anything, to be the person my dogs think I am.

15 Bloggers! Oh my… Well maybe this is cheating but I would truly have to say the first ten are the freshly pressed blogs of the day.  I always go to them first and I’ve rarely been disappointed.  Hint hint “Freshly Press Me!” But five others I’ve recently discovered are:

1. Oh how I love Lady Muffett who knows more about cheese than the cows themselves!

2. I love The W Perspective. But who doesn’t? This photography is so beautiful.

3. When I’m not gardening, or taking pictures, I’m reading.  A great book blog is The Persnickety Reader.

4. I love hearing about anyone settling into a new life in Paris so of course I’m glad I discovered Alexis In Paris.

5. Shebicycles is a great photoblog! I just discovered it the other day.

A rose is a rose is a rose

It was a beautiful day to attend to things in the garden so the minute I could I ran off to Cottage Gardens of Petaluma.  They have everything there you can think of and the actual nursery is so beautiful to walk around in you may never leave.  But today I went there because they have such an amazing selection of pots and planters.  I picked up several pots for roses, and then couldn’t resist buying an old rusty trellis and a pink climbing rose — Cecile Brunner — to plant against a green stucco wall behind the pool.  When it blooms, I’ll be sure to blog it!

Then it was off to the Garden Valley Ranch which is a magnet for all rosarians.  Virtually every rose you can think of is here, and many you may never heard of.  Nothing is in bloom yet, but in a few weeks I’ll wander back and take some photos of some of the roses themselves.  But I did pick up several David Austen roses I wanted and then took the time to wander about taking pictures of the grounds.

A quick snap of last year’s garden.  In a few weeks they will bloom again!
